The photographer who met with an unfortunate accident on Cougar Rock this year is mending well. We are grateful to report that he did not sustain any neck or head injuries and that his broken bones are healing.
- The other good news is that the Cougar Rock photos are now on-line and can be ordered by going to www.hughes-photography.com.

- THE PASSING of JIM STEERE, DVM
Jim Steere, DVM, died peacefully in August. Jim was a gifted veterinarian who vetted the Tevis on many occasions, and claimed the title of being the eldest person to complete the ride. In 2005, at the age of 80, Jim grinned as he crossed the Tevis finish line. An icon in the endurance community, he will be missed. ARTICLE IN MARINE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL-AUGUST 9, 2010

- FAREWELL ALSO TO DAVE CLAGETT

Dave lost his battle August 14th with leukemia. He completed Tevis 3 times. Although not a founding member he was associated with the early creation of the American Endurance Ride Conference (AERC), where he served as director, vice-president and president in 1979. He was involved in forming a national AERC office that exists today, whose efforts placed him in AERC's Hall of Fame along with his wife Marianne. His zest and positive attitude will be missed.

- The 2010 Education Ride Results are posted and a posting from Ride Management.
Here is a comment about this year's ride:
Hi Terry,
Thanks to you and Kathy for all your hard work in putting on the Educational ride. Also much thanks to all of your vets, cooks, volunteers, and especially Greg for hauling the water. Our group was very thankful for it at Francisco's and after making the climb back up to Foresthill. I also really enjoyed listening to the talks from Melissa, Debby, Lori and it was a special treat to hear Sharon Saare. We all learned allot from their knowledge and experience.
From where I was, leading the last group with my great partners, Shannon and Steve Hallmark, everything seemed to run super smoothly. We had one horse in our group that lost some easyboots and was a little uptight being in the pack, but he lined out well coming into White Oaks. He and his rider had completed only one 50 miler this year, so they were both very inexperienced. Unfortunately, they were pulled at Todds Valley for lameness. I think they both learned allot though. The girls from Texas were a little intimidated by the trail, but of course they had never seen anything like it. Both of their lease horses made them feel safe. We were a little slower because of the time it took our 12 horses to water, than what was scheduled for us, but I think we still finished up close to the time Kathy figured out for our group.
I thought the changes from last year, having (3) leaders, color coded groups, designated spots at the vet checks and the 10 minute interval timing to start all worked really well. I really liked making the loop back through Todds Valley. It was a good alternative and a good choice.
I will not be able to attend the upcoming board meeting on July 17th. I will be available after the ride if you decide to hold your meeting there. Thanks again and congratulations on running a successful event. Can't wait to hear about your trip to Australia.

- A NEW Riders' List has been posted. We now have 178 entries.
- WE NEED VOLUNTEERS: TEVIS is falling short of volunteers this year. If you would like information or to volunteer please fill out the VOLUNTEER FORM. You can also contact Judy Suter.
- The trail is clear and open from Dusty Corners and points west (beware of rattlersnakes, a number have been spotted) and that there is snow east of Dusty Corners in spots on both the roads and trails. You might mention that it is a rapidly changing situation.
- NOTE FROM WSTF PRESIDENT: The annual Tevis BOG pre-ride work party at Robie Park is rescheduled to July 17th instead of either July 3rd the original date or Saturday July 10th the fall back date we were going to move to. In terms of the work party, we need to spread the straw in the Mansfield Arena, clean up downed trees and otherwise spruce up the Park, and do whatever trail work we can on the trail to 89 and the local park trails. Folks are welcome to come up Friday night and or stay over Saturday night and camp and ride. We will start work around 9:30 am on Saturday morning and try to finish by noonish then have a bag lunch/potluck. Gloves and pitchforks are helpful along with tools for cutting the white thorn bushes. You might also want to bring a chair and a little food. I will bring drinks. Please RSVP so we can get a good count. I am hoping we will have the same good turnout we had last year.
- HRTV DOING DOCUMENTARY AT TEVIS THIS YEAR
Television station HRTV is sending six cameramen and crew members to Tevis this year to gather footage for what will be a one-hour documentary about the ride. We’ve been planning their routes and strategy for months and scouting out places for them to shoot. It’s going to be a great production, so smile for the camera when you see them along the trail! We’ll let you know when the documentary airs on HRTV.
- THREE RIDERS FROM FOREIGN COUNTRIES SIGNED UP
Japan, Canada and Australia. But entries aren’t closed yet, so we’ll see what other passports show up!

- GET TO RIDE SOME OF THE OLD TEVIS TRAIL - EDUCATION RIDE COURSE CHANGE: The Educational Ride will start at the Mill Site in Foresthill. We will follow the trail down to Peachstone and on to Fords Bar. From there the trail follows high above the river to Francisco's. It is at Francisco's that the trail will turn up the mountain toward White Oak Flat, one of Tevis' original vet stops. After a one-hour stop at White Oak the riders will continue through Todd Valley on the old Tevis Trail and back onto the existing Tevis trail. Once back on the Tevis Trail we will backtrack up to Foresthill and the Mill Site.
You still have time to enter the ride. Call Terryl at 530.852.2111 to confirm you entry. Since the ride goes back into Foresthill there will be no need for drivers to get the trailers to Auburn.
